We are now coming towards the end of another very busy summer season which will include our Finals Day on Saturday 22nd July. See below for more information on this, developments on court improvements/maintenance and upcoming events. I would also like to remind members about social play. Club rules are clear that we should mix in with one another with 4s being selected from the first 6 names on the board. No name in the frame = no game! And the presumption is that we play Mixed Doubles wherever possible. Finally, please ensure that Club Rule 5 is borne in mind: “No bad language or offensive behaviour on or off court.” The terms “dash it” or “drat” are, however, allowed if you should happen to hit a bad shot (not something I ever do of course).
Upgrading of the bottom 4 courts will go ahead from 14th August. They will be pressure-washed, treated with moss inhibitor and then painted. There will be an impact on social play while this work is undertaken: see separate note opposite. The fencing at either end of courts 1 and 2 has now been replaced as the old ones were worn and dangerous.
Fund raising/Future Events
The 100 Club badly needs more members signing up. The cost is only £48 a year (less than a £1 a week) and there are 2 prizes each month of £30 and £15. See Bernie, our Treasurer, and sign up today! Saturday 22nd July is Club Finals day so come along and see some (hopefully) good tennis. Start time is 12.30 and there will be refreshments available including a BBQ. On the same day in the morning from 10.00am, the Club will be running an Invitation day designed to encourage more people – adults & juniors – to take up the sport. Ernie will be running the event on behalf of the Club but would welcome volunteers to help.
An American tournament will take place on Monday 28th August at 10.00am with prizes for the leading man & lady! Look out for the entry form on the board coming soon. Two more events to look forward to later in the year: our famous Quiz evening and a cheese & wine lunch. More details later.
Committee work and ClubSpark
Thanks to all those who have joined using ClubSpark and who have been patient while we bed the new system in. As already mentioned, our aim is to run all Club admin – particularly membership renewals/applications and payment of subscriptions - through ClubSpark from April 2018. Please be assured that this LTA-sponsored tool is as safe to use as anything on-line can be these days. Your data is not passed on to any third parties and paying your membership fee through the system is just like buying any other product through the Internet. It also enables us to offer payment of subs via direct debit thus spreading the costs.
There will be some vacancies on the Committee next year when the Club will require a new Chairman to replace me and a Vice-Chairman to replace John Duffin. These are important roles which must be filled if the Club is to be run effectively. Please consider whether you feel able to put your name forward for consideration. Job descriptions are available for both so please let me know if you are interested.
There will be an impact on social play while the bottom courts are upgraded. For the period of the works - expected to be 2 weeks starting on Mon 14th August – there can be no social play in the mornings. Ernie will be running summer camps for kids on the top 4 courts throughout the school holidays until 12.30pm each day on Monday to Fridays. Thereafter, the top courts will be free for social play in the afternoons. The Committee realise that this will cause some inconvenience but please bear with us on this. The end result will be worth it.
Finally, the usual reminder to please not leave any debris on the courts. The court tidy-up gang are fed up with picking up drinks bottles, paper cups, ring pulls, sweet/crisp packets etc. Bin it when you come off court please! Please also release the net tension if you are last on any court. This helps reduce wind damage to the posts etc. And make sure the courts and the ball cupboard are locked please.
